Authentic Texas Hold'em Beginner's Guide

Master the fundamentals of No-Limit Texas Hold'em—from the 6 street stages and dealer button position strategy to the 6 core betting actions and essential poker terminology.

01 · WHAT IS TEXAS HOLD'EM?

What Is Texas Hold'em?

Texas Hold'em is the world's premier community card poker game where each player combines 2 private Hole Cards with 5 shared Community Cards dealt face up in the center of the table to form the strongest 5-card poker hand out of 7 total cards.

Use 2 hole + 3 board, 1 hole + 4 board, or all 5 board cards

Two Ways to Win the Pot

  • 1. Showdown Win: Players remaining after the final River betting round reveal their hands, and the highest 5-card hand ranking claims the pot.
  • 2. Uncontested Win: If all opponents fold to your bet or raise on any street, you win the pot immediately without revealing your hole cards (Muck).
02 · STEP-BY-STEP GAME FLOW

The 6 Stages of a Hold'em Hand (Blinds to Showdown)

STAGE 1 · BLINDS0 Board Cards

Blinds & Dealer Button

Forced Bets & Dealer Position

Before each hand, the Dealer Button (D) moves one seat clockwise. The player to the left posts the Small Blind (SB) and the next player posts the Big Blind (BB).

Pro Tip: In 2-player Heads-Up play, the Dealer Button (D) also posts the Small Blind (SB) under official WSOP/TDA rules.
STAGE 2 · PREFLOP0 Board Cards

Pre-Flop · 2 Hole Cards Dealt

Two Hole Cards Dealt

Every player receives two private Hole Cards face down. The first betting round begins with Under the Gun (UTG), immediately left of the Big Blind.

Pro Tip: Consider both hand strength (pocket pairs like AA, KK, QQ or suited broadways like AKs) and your table position before open-raising.
STAGE 3 · FLOP3 Board Cards

Flop · 3 Community Cards Revealed

First Three Community Cards

After burning one card, three shared Community Cards are dealt face up in the center. Post-flop betting starts from the first active player left of the Dealer Button.

Pro Tip: Five of your seven total cards (71%) are now visible. Evaluate both made hands and flush/straight draw outs.
STAGE 4 · TURN4 Board Cards

Turn (Fourth Street) · 4th Card Revealed

Fourth Community Card

A fourth community card is dealt face up on the board, opening the third betting round as pot sizes grow significantly.

Pro Tip: Multiply your remaining winning Outs by 2 on the Turn to quickly estimate your percentage chance of hitting on the River.
STAGE 5 · RIVER5 Board Cards

River (Fifth Street) · 5th & Final Card

Fifth & Final Community Card

The fifth and final community card is revealed. With no more cards to come, players make their final Value Bets or Bluffs.

Pro Tip: If all opponents fold to a bet on the River, the last remaining player wins the pot immediately without showing hole cards (Muck).
STAGE 6 · SHOWDOWN5 Board Cards

Showdown · Best 5-Card Hand Wins

Best 5-Card Hand Wins the Pot

If two or more players remain after River betting, hole cards are revealed and the strongest 5-card hand out of 7 cards claims the pot.

Pro Tip: In multi-way all-in pots, contributions are cleanly separated into a Main Pot and Side Pots by stack depth.
03 · TABLE POSITIONS & HEADS-UP RULE

Understanding Table Positions (Position Is Information)

Acting later in a betting round (Late Position) lets you observe your opponents' decisions first, providing a decisive strategic advantage.

BTN (D)Maximum Advantage

Dealer Button (BTN)

Late Position · Dealer Button

Acts last on every post-flop street (Flop, Turn, River). Seeing every opponent act first gives the Dealer Button the strongest informational edge.

COHigh Advantage

Cutoff (CO)

Late Position · Cutoff

Seated immediately to the right of the Button. If the Button folds, the Cutoff acts last on all post-flop streets, ideal for wide open-raises.

HJ / MPBalanced

Hijack / Middle Position

Middle Position · Hijack & Middle Position

Allows a wider opening range than early position, while remaining mindful of 3-bets from the Cutoff, Button, and Blinds.

UTGTight Selection

Under the Gun (UTG)

Early Position · Under the Gun

First to act pre-flop with the entire table still behind. Requires disciplined selection with premium starting hands.

SBFirst Post-Flop

Small Blind (SB)

Blind Position · Small Blind

Posts half a big blind pre-flop and must act first (Out of Position) on every post-flop street, requiring careful range construction.

BBLast Pre-Flop

Big Blind (BB)

Blind Position · Big Blind

Posts 1 BB forced bet and acts last pre-flop, offering favorable pot odds to defend against late-position raises.

Official 2-Player Heads-Up Position Rule

When only 2 active players remain in a 1-on-1 Heads-Up match, official WSOP and Poker TDA rules stipulate that the Dealer Button (BTN/D) also posts the Small Blind (SB). Therefore, the Dealer (SB) acts first Pre-Flop, while the Big Blind (BB) acts first on the Flop, Turn, and River—preserving the Button's post-flop positional advantage.

04 · 6 PLAYER ACTIONS & TDA RULES

CALLCall

When Available: When a previous player has placed a Bet or Raise
